Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) assists member countries in improving the sound management of chemicals through:
- Promoting the provisions of the Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides and providing technical assistance to implement rational plant protection programmes and preventing and disposing obsolete and unwanted pesticides;
- Jointly with IAEA, improving the agrochemical usage in food and agriculture;
- Jointly with the UNEP, implementing the Prior Informed Consent procedure;
- Jointly with WHO, making recommendations for Acceptable Daily Intakes of food additives, pesticide and veterinary drug residues, and for Maximum Residue Limits in food for pesticides and veterinary drugs, as well as for tolerable intakes of other food contaminants;
- Providing the Secretariat for the Joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, the executive organ of the joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme.
